Patonga Cottages
Patonga Cottage is nestled in the tranquil village of Patonga, NSW, offering a serene escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Originally serving as the village Post Office, this charming property has been meticulously transformed into a holiday cottage that blends historic charm with modern comforts.
A quiet coastal escape, removed from the pace of the city, where the experience is as much about atmosphere as it is about the stay itself. The challenge was to translate that feeling into a digital format. This wasn’t a content-heavy brief. The goal wasn’t to explain everything, but to evoke something. The website needed to create a sense of calm, curiosity, and anticipation—encouraging visitors to imagine themselves there before they even considered booking.
At the same time, it still needed to perform. Users had to be able to quickly understand what was on offer, explore the cottages, and move seamlessly toward enquiry or booking, without breaking the mood the site was designed to create.
What we did
We approached the design with restraint and intention. Rather than filling the space, we focused on creating it – allowing imagery, layout, and pacing to shape the experience.
Photography and videography became the hero. Large, immersive visuals were given room to breathe, showcasing the cottages, outdoor spaces, and coastal surroundings in a way that feels natural and inviting. The design steps back, letting these moments carry the narrative.
Typography and colour were deliberately understated. Soft tones and simple type choices support the content without drawing attention to themselves, reinforcing the relaxed, coastal feel of the brand.
The structure of the site was kept intentionally simple. Users can move effortlessly from discovery to exploration to booking, without unnecessary steps or distractions. It’s a journey that feels easy, intuitive, and in keeping with the overall tone of the experience.
The tech stack
The site was delivered as a bespoke WordPress build, designed to give the Patonga Cottages team full control over their content while maintaining a consistent and polished presentation.
We created a flexible framework for managing imagery, cottage information, and key content areas, ensuring the site can evolve as the business grows. Updates can be made without compromising the visual integrity of the design. With a strong reliance on high-quality imagery, optimisation was essential to ensure the site loads quickly and performs smoothly across all devices.
Bringing It All Together
The final website feels like an extension of the destination itself – calm, understated, and quietly confident. It invites users in without overwhelming them, creating space for imagination and exploration.
By focusing on mood and simplicity, the site builds a strong emotional connection early. Visitors are drawn in, encouraged to slow down, and picture the experience for themselves. In the end, the website does exactly what it needs to: it captures attention, builds desire, and makes it easy to take the next step.
