A W Edwards
Jimmyweb designed and developed the website for A W Edwards, one of Australia’s most established construction companies with a history dating back to 1921, delivering large-scale, complex projects across health, education, commercial, transport, and infrastructure. Custom built on WordPress with Job API integration, the site combines an ultra-minimal palette, bold modern typography, and large-format project imagery to communicate the scale and reliability of a 100-plus year business, with a flexible page system that supports projects, sectors, careers, and ongoing company growth.
A W Edwards is one of Australia’s most established construction companies, with a history dating back to 1921. Known for delivering large-scale, complex projects across sectors including health, education, commercial, transport and infrastructure, the business has built a reputation on reliability, longevity and consistent delivery.
AW Edwards returned to Jimmyweb to create another website, Rintoul, not long after this site went live. This ongoing partnership reflects the confidence they have in Jimmyweb, the design approach, and the results delivered.
The project brief was to create a digital presence that genuinely reflected the scale, maturity and credibility of A W Edwards. This is not a company that needs to “sell” in a traditional sense. Instead, the website needed to reinforce confidence, communicate capability and position the business as a low-risk, experienced, high-trust partner for major projects.
Another key consideration was avoiding the common pitfalls of construction websites. Many competitors either feel outdated and overly technical, or swing too far in the opposite direction with overly trendy design that undermines credibility. The brief required a careful balance. The site needed to feel modern and refined, but also grounded, stable and appropriate for institutional audiences.
There was also the complexity of content structure. With multiple sectors, a large portfolio of projects, detailed company information and recruitment content, the site had to present a significant amount of information without becoming overwhelming or difficult to navigate.
What we did
We began this project with a Discovery phase to better understand the client’s and their customers’ issues and intended objectives. Our discussions revealed the key issues with the old website, as well as potential opportunities, and assisted us in defining the objectives that would guide the redesign.
Five major elements of the website were important to the stakeholders:
- Modernise the design (the previous design was very dated and limiting)
- Provide a positive mobile experience
- Make it easy for visitors to discover important information
- Be able to utilize existing photography (some of which was small, but with 100 years of service, it would be hard to retake)
- Make it simple for clients to edit and maintain material on the site
We recommended developing a well-designed, logical layout system that would be aesthetically appealing to the consumer and would give the client flexibility and configurability when building out new pages into the future. Rather than over-designing the experience, we allowed the scale and quality of A W Edwards’ work to take centre stage. Large-format project imagery, clean layouts and generous spacing were used to create a sense of confidence and authority from the first interaction.
UX/UI prototyping
We developed the site architecture and generated a series of wireframes throughout the UX planning phase, which acted as “blueprints” for the site layout and allowed us to swiftly test concepts to ensure the client and customer user experience was optimised.
Together with the A W Edwards team, we developed a design language that used strong elements from their established and trusted brand to create a distinguished appearance that worked well across different sections of the website.
We used an ultra-minimal colour palette – a colour hierarchy with a strong use of the key branding colours – and utilized clear spacing that creates a seamless flow to content within the site. The new typography combinations are bold and modern, which evoke the clients’ ambitions of strength and reliability. The result is a design that feels considered and enduring, aligning with the company’s 100-plus-year history.
We also paid close attention to the user journey. Navigation was structured to make it easy for different audiences to find what they need, whether they are exploring project work, assessing capability, or looking into careers. Despite the depth of content, the experience remains intuitive and uncluttered.
Throughout the site, we introduced subtle motion and interaction to enhance usability without distracting from the content. The overall experience feels contemporary, but never forced. Every design decision was made to support the core objective: building trust.
The tech stack
The website was custom designed and built on WordPress, providing A W Edwards with a flexible and scalable platform to manage their content. The CMS allows for easy updates across projects, sectors and company information, ensuring the site can evolve alongside the business.
Our involvement extended beyond design and development. We provided creative direction, responsive implementation across all devices, managed website hosting, and ongoing maintenance and support. This ensures the platform remains stable, secure and consistently performing over time.
Performance optimisation
Performance was a key focus throughout the build. The site has been carefully optimised to ensure fast load times across desktop and mobile, particularly important given the use of high-quality project imagery. A fast, responsive website not only improves the user experience but also supports stronger search visibility and engagement.
Bringing It All Together
The finished website positions A W Edwards exactly where it should be. It communicates scale, experience and reliability within seconds, giving users immediate confidence in the business. The design does not try to overstate or overcomplicate. Instead, it reflects the company’s strengths through clarity, structure and visual impact.
Importantly, the site works as both a branding tool and a practical resource. It supports business development, recruitment and stakeholder engagement, while remaining easy to navigate and maintain. The result is a digital presence that feels aligned with the organisation behind it and capable of supporting its next phase of growth.
What we loved
We challenged ourselves to make an experience that would solve the usual visual limitations of presenting a construction company. This pushed away the obvious solutions and allowed us to experiment more. Taking this challenge led us to a more unique result that we’re very proud of.
What they loved
Clean, refined, and modern.
Quite simply, having a website that presents a modern take on a well-established 100-year-old construction company that is appealing to all of their stake-holders – from the management team and staff, possible recruits, to potential customers.
