Laboratories Credit Union
Laboratories Credit Union is not trying to behave like a fintech startup, and that was clear from the outset. The challenge was to design a website that felt steady, human, and quietly confident. In a market full of noise, bold claims, and over-designed interfaces, this project required restraint. The site needed to communicate trust without leaning on outdated visual cues, and modernity without chasing trends.
There was also a very specific audience to consider. Many members come from scientific and research backgrounds, and a significant portion are long-standing customers. The experience needed to feel approachable and familiar, particularly for older users, while still presenting the organisation as current and well-maintained. Accessibility, clarity, and ease of navigation were not secondary concerns, they were central to the brief.
At the same time, the brand has a unique story. Its connection to the science and research community gives it character, but that identity is subtle. The challenge was to reflect that personality without becoming overly thematic or forced. It needed to feel intelligent and grounded, not gimmicky.
What we did
We focused on building a calm, structured interface that puts clarity ahead of everything else. The layout is intentionally predictable in the best sense. Users can move through the site without friction, with clearly segmented product areas and a hierarchy that guides rather than pushes. Nothing competes for attention unnecessarily.
Typography and spacing played a key role. We chose highly readable type and allowed generous breathing room across all pages. This creates a sense of ease and reduces cognitive load, especially for users who may not be as comfortable navigating more complex digital interfaces. The pacing of the site feels steady rather than rushed, which aligns with the tone of the organisation itself.
Visually, we avoided the clichés often seen in financial websites. There are no aggressive calls to action, no overuse of icons, and no artificial urgency. Instead, the design leans into reassurance. Imagery supports the message of community and personal service, rather than aspiration or status. The overall effect is a site that feels grounded and dependable.
We also ensured the brand’s connection to science and research was present in a subtle way. Rather than leaning on obvious visual metaphors, we allowed the structure, tone, and clarity of the interface to carry that sense of intelligence and precision.
The tech stack
The website was delivered as a fully bespoke design and custom WordPress build. This gave us complete control over the structure, performance, and flexibility of the site, without being constrained by templates or pre-built themes.
From a performance perspective, speed optimisation was a priority. Pages load quickly and consistently, supporting both user experience and search visibility. This is particularly important for a site that targets a broad demographic, including users who may be on older devices or slower connections.
WordPress provides the client with a familiar and manageable content environment. The backend is streamlined to make updates straightforward, allowing the team to maintain content without unnecessary complexity while still benefiting from a robust and scalable platform.
