Bowker Beach House – Lord Howe
Jimmyweb designed and developed the Bowker Beach House website to reflect the privacy, stillness and natural beauty of its Lord Howe Island setting. The custom WordPress build uses restrained design, immersive photography and fast performance to create a calm, premium experience that feels authentic to the property and supports direct enquiries.
Bowker Beach House is not a typical accommodation offering. It sits in a place where the environment does most of the talking, and where the experience is defined by privacy, stillness, and a sense of distance from everyday life. The challenge was to create a website that reflected that reality without falling into the usual patterns of tourism design.
Bowker Beach House returned to Jimmyweb after this website was launched, to create another website for Lagoon Landing, a new Lord Howe Island property. This ongoing partnership reflects the confidence they have in Jimmyweb, the design approach, and the results delivered.
Many accommodation websites lean heavily on urgency, promotions, and over-communication. That approach would have felt out of place here. Bowker Beach House needed something quieter. The site had to feel premium, but not polished to the point of feeling corporate or generic. It needed to feel human, grounded, and connected to its surroundings.
There was also a balance to strike visually. The property itself sits between architectural simplicity and natural texture, so the website had to mirror that. Too minimal and it risks feeling empty. Too styled and it becomes another “luxury template” with no personality. The goal was to land somewhere authentic, where the design supports the experience rather than competing with it.
What we did
We approached the design with restraint from the outset. Instead of building layers of features and visual elements, we focused on clarity, rhythm, and space. The layout gives content room to breathe, allowing visitors to move through the site at a slower, more considered pace.
Photography was treated as the primary storytelling tool. Large, immersive imagery leads the experience, with concise copy used to support rather than explain. This allows the atmosphere of the property to come through naturally. Visitors understand the tone of the stay within seconds, without needing to read long descriptions.
The interface was kept intentionally simple. Navigation is clear and unobtrusive, and calls to action are present without being forceful. There are no aggressive prompts or interruptions. Instead, the design builds quiet confidence over time, encouraging users to explore rather than pushing them to convert immediately.
Visually, the design sits between boutique eco-luxury and contemporary coastal minimalism. Soft spacing, natural colour tones, and balanced typography create a calm, architectural feel. The result is a site that feels aligned with the physical experience of the property rather than layered on top of it.
The tech stack
The website was delivered as a fully bespoke design and custom WordPress build. This gave us the flexibility to shape the structure and user experience around the property, rather than adapting to a pre-built theme or template.
Performance was a key focus throughout development. With a media-rich design relying heavily on large imagery, careful optimisation was essential. We implemented image handling, caching, and code efficiencies to ensure fast load times without compromising visual quality.
The result is a site that feels visually rich but remains technically efficient. It performs well across devices, maintaining the same calm and seamless experience whether viewed on desktop or mobile.

By focusing on simplicity and authenticity, the site avoids the common pitfalls of accommodation design. It feels considered, intentional, and quietly confident. Most importantly, it feels like the place it represents.
What we loved
What stood out most was the restraint. The design does not try to do too much, and that is exactly why it works. The slower pacing feels natural and appropriate, reinforcing the sense of escape that Lord Howe Island is known for. That alignment between experience and interface is rare. The site feels like an extension of the destination rather than a layer sitting on top of it.

The client connected immediately with the direction. The design captured the tone they were aiming for without overcomplicating it.
