Earls Anchorage – Lord Howe
Earl’s Anchorage sits in one of the most unique locations in Australia, on Lord Howe Island, where the landscape itself sets a very high bar. The challenge was not just to build a functional accommodation website, but to create something that felt worthy of the environment and the property itself.
From the outset, there was a clear direction to avoid two common pitfalls in this space. The site could not feel like a dated motel website with generic layouts and templated content, nor could it fall into the trap of over-designed luxury trends that often feel interchangeable and lacking in personality. The goal was to find a balance between restraint and identity.
There was also a strong conceptual layer to consider. The nautical inspiration behind Earl’s Anchorage had the potential to become overly literal or decorative. The challenge was to express this influence in a subtle, architectural way that complemented the property rather than overpowering it.
At its core, the brief called for a bespoke digital experience that would reflect the craftsmanship, privacy, and calm of the accommodation itself, while allowing the imagery and setting to take centre stage.
What we did
We approached the design with a focus on simplicity, clarity, and atmosphere. Rather than relying on heavy visual effects or trend-driven layouts, we built a custom design system that prioritised space, proportion, and rhythm. Large-format imagery plays a leading role throughout the site, supported by concise, carefully placed content that guides the user without interrupting the experience.
A key consideration was how to interpret the nautical theme. Instead of leaning into obvious motifs, we translated it into a more architectural language. This meant clean lines, balanced compositions, and a palette that feels grounded in the natural environment. The result is a design that acknowledges the story behind the property without becoming themed or ornamental.
The structure of the site was designed to feel calm and unforced. Each section flows naturally into the next, with generous spacing that reflects the slower pace of the destination. The content is intentionally minimal, allowing visitors to absorb the experience visually while still finding the information they need with ease.
Overall, the design aims to feel premium without trying too hard. It avoids unnecessary complexity and instead focuses on creating a sense of place, using restraint as a strength rather than a limitation.
The tech stack
Earl’s Anchorage was built as a fully bespoke WordPress website, allowing complete flexibility in both design and functionality. This approach ensured that the final product was not constrained by templates or pre-built components, giving us the freedom to create a truly custom experience aligned with the brand.
On the development side, we focused on clean, efficient code to support performance and long-term reliability. Every component was purpose-built to match the design, ensuring consistency across all pages and devices.
With a content-heavy site driven by high-quality imagery, we implemented speed optimisation techniques to ensure fast load times without compromising visual impact. This included image handling strategies, performance tuning, and careful asset management to deliver a smooth browsing experience.
Bringing It All Together
The final website captures the essence of Earl’s Anchorage as a destination. It presents the property in a way that feels calm, considered, and authentic, allowing the architecture, interiors, and surrounding landscape to speak for themselves.
Rather than competing for attention, the design supports the experience. Visitors are guided through the site in a way that feels intuitive and relaxed, mirroring the pace and mood of a stay on Lord Howe Island.
By combining a bespoke design approach with thoughtful development and performance optimisation, the result is a website that not only looks refined but also performs reliably across all devices. It strikes a balance between aesthetic restraint and functional clarity.
What we loved
What stood out most in this project was the opportunity to work with a concept that could easily have been overdone, and instead treat it with restraint. The nautical influence was handled in a way that feels subtle and architectural, avoiding clichés and giving the site a distinct identity. We also appreciated the simplicity of the design direction. By focusing on strong imagery, minimal copy, and generous spacing, the site achieves a premium feel without relying on unnecessary embellishment. It proves that a considered, pared-back approach can be far more effective than over-designing.
What Earls Anchorage loved
The client was particularly pleased with how the website reflects the character of the property. The design feels on brand and communicates the experience clearly, without needing to over-explain or oversell. They also valued the way the site uses large imagery, short content sections, and breathing room to create a natural flow. The result is a browsing experience that feels calm and inviting, rather than rushed or overly focused on conversion, which aligns perfectly with the tone of the destination.
